Make the most of your smartphone with shopping apps

Smartphones are making our lives easier - even helping us to do our holiday shopping and save money in the process!  Depending on your cell phone model and service provider, there are a variety of downloadable applications (apps) available to help you make purchases, compare prices by scanning product barcodes, access coupon codes that can be used for in-store or online shopping, navigate shopping malls and even receive discounts based on your location using geo-location applications like Shopkick.  And of course, you can check out online product reviews on your cell phone while you are shopping in-store.  Watch CBS News' report on using apps for holiday shopping below:

No fruitcakes or pajamas! Create a universal online wishlist to let everyone know what you really want!

While you are busy shopping for great gifts for your loved ones, hopefully they are picking great gifts for you!  But if you want to help them out, set up an online wishlist (or registry) and share its link with your friends and family.   You can create wishlists on your favorite retailer's website including items on that site but with a universal online wishlist like the ones you can create on sites like Amazon.com, Kaboodle.com, Wishlistr.com and WishPot.com you can include items from anywhere on the web.  There are many sites offering wishlist services and each one works a bit differently with some offering features like a browser add-on button so you can add to your wishlist directly from another website or making your wishlist searchable.  We hope you get exactly what you want!

SHOPPING ONLINE: Read online products reviews to be sure you are getting your money's worth!

In addition to taking time to visit price comparison websites to find the best online shopping deals,  we also recommend checking out online product reviews before making your gift purchases to read opinions of other buyers on a product's (or service's) quality, fit, functionality or value.

According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project,  58% of Americans report that they perform online research regarding the products and services that they would like to purchase even if they eventually end up making a purchase in a brick-and-mortar store.  ....Interestingly, the study reveals that only 24% of American adults report having posted comments or reviews online about the product or services they buy.
